There are many beliefs
and legends about the ancient Thracians. One of the most
important among them is the legend about Orpheus, which came
to us across the ages. Orpheus is known from the mythology
as the only mortal who entered the underground kingdom of
Hades to save and bring back his beloved Eurydice.
Many people know that Orpheus is a Thracian but only a few
know that he has created a unique religious cult that has
been present for millenniums not only in the Rhodopes Mountain
but everywhere on the Balkan Peninsula : the Ethics of Initiation.
According to authors from the Antiquity, Orpheus was a singer,
a prophet, a healer, a priest and a king. The etymology of
the name is Phoenician. Literally translated it means “one
who heals with light”.
The other symbol connected inseparably with Orpheus is his
seven-string lyre. Seven like the days of the Genesis and
like the seven planets, which determine what we call the
astrology of life. However, the secret of his knowledge and
the secret of his doctrine lie in music.
The legend does not say what Orpheus taught his auditors
because the anthem/prayer was a mystery and it was forbidden
to disclose it. The cult of immortality, to which it initiated,
is the striving toward internal purification and purification
comes after pain and redemption to become faith. |
